Michael E. Berend, MD

Dr. Berend has always loved science and health. He studied chemistry at Hanover College, then went on to Duke University Medical Center to pursue orthopedic surgery, representing the top 10% of his medical school class. Known by his classmates for his charismatic personality, he was chosen to be the graduation commencement speaker. Berend moved to Mooresville to complete a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery, then continued to practice there for 16 years.

Not only is Dr. Berend an expert in his craft, he is also an innovator. During the past decade, he has helped design multiple hip, knee, and partial knee implant systems. He has trained over 3,000 surgeons in his specialized surgical techniques and has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals. He is 1 of 50 members in the USA of both the Knee Society and the Hip Society. Dr. Berend has been recognized by his peers as one of the top surgeons in North America.

Dr. Berend is deeply passionate about his career. He has traveled internationally with Operation Walk, a Christian medical mission organization performing free joint replacements around the world — one of the most fulfilling projects in his life.

In his free time, Dr. Berend is a pilot and has been flying for over 32 years. When he’s not up in the air, he’s raising three amazing children with his wife Julie. He is active in Redeemer Presbyterian Church and enjoys cycling.

Wesley G. Lackey, MD

Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Dr. Lackey attended Vanderbilt University where he earned a degree in Violin Performance and fulfilled his pre-medical requirements. He then attended Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. During his time in Indianapolis, Dr. Lackey met Dr. Berend through their church, and they continued a friendship through the rest of Dr. Lackey’s education.

After medical school, Dr. Lackey moved to South Carolina to complete his five-year orthopedic surgical residency with the Greenville Hospital System. He then returned to Indianapolis and completed a hip and knee fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. Berend. Lackey and Berend have been in practice together ever since.

Dr. Lackey has also traveled internationally with Operation Walk, a Christian medical mission organization performing free joint replacements around the world.

Outside the operating room, Dr. Lackey enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, Gillian, their son, and their spirited Westie, Parker.

Joshua L. Carter, MD

Dr. Carter completed his undergraduate degree with Summa Cum Laude honors at the University of Kentucky with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He earned a full-ride scholarship to attend the UK College of Medicine where he graduated with AOA honors. During medical school, Dr. Carter fueled a passion of his by spending two months in a mission hospital in Kenya, performing orthopedic care in the third world.

During his five-year orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Vermont, Dr. Carter was introduced to Dr. Berend and Dr. Lackey, and new friendships began to grow. These relationships continued to flourish throughout his Adult Reconstruction Fellowship, which he completed at the highly regarded OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Carter has been in practice in the Indianapolis area ever since. He specializes in the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement surgery.

When out of his hospital scrubs, Dr. Carter enjoys woodworking, coffee roasting, and disc golf. He is active in his church, and is richly blessed with his loving wife, Jessica, and four exuberant kids who still can’t outwrestle him.

Scott Linger, MD gradated with 'highest-distinction' and was the 2007 valedictorian in Purdue University's School of Pharmacy. He would go on to be a pharmacist for one year before enrolling in Indiana University's School of Medicine. Dr. Linger became an M.D. in 2012 with 'highest-distinction.' He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency from Indiana University's School of Medicine in 2017. Dr. Linger most recently completed his orthopaedic sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at TRIA Orthopaedic Center and the University of Minnesota.

Vascular Center

Ricardo Vasquez, MD is graduate of the University of Iowa School of Medicine. Dr. Vasquez has been practicing for nearly 15 years. He performs abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery and stenting, carotid surgery, peripheral artery disease evaluations, and the latest minimally invasive varicose vein procedures.

Dr. Vasquez is now offering a new procedure at Monroe Hospital to treat patients with carotid artery disease. TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) is a clinically proven treatment that utilizes temporary flow reversal during direct, transcarotid stent placement for best-in-class neuroprotection in a more efficient and less invasive approach than traditional carotid endarterectomy.

Summit Urology

Brian J. Logue, MD is a board-certified urologist with a special interest in kidney stone surgery. Dr. Logue graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the Indiana University School of Medicine. He received his initial general surgery training from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and went on to complete his residency in urologic surgery at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Eric M. Smith, MD, is a board-certified by the American Board of Urology with expertise in kidney stones, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, men’s health, and incontinence. Dr. Smith graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He went on to complete his general surgery training and urology residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Warren L. Gray, M.D., is a urologist board certified by the American Board of Urology. He has a long experience in surgery of the kidneys, bladder, and prostate as well as urinary incontinence and other general urology issues. Dr. Gray graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He then obtained his medical degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana with an internship in general surgery. He went on to complete his training with a residency in urology at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

David Elkins, PA earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Indiana University and completed his Physician Assistant training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago Illinois. He is currently a member of the American Urological Association, American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Indiana Academy of Physician Assistants. He is certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants.

Jennifer Kempfer, PA-C attended Indiana University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Neuroscience. Jennifer graduating from Eastern Virginia Medical School with a Masters in Physician Assisting. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Pi Alpha Honor Society.
